New timeline for the integration of SSH and STEM competencies in AAU's degree programs

Lagt online: 02.02.2024

The implementation of the strategy project "SSH and STEM competencies in AAU's degree programs" will be moved from spring 2024 to spring 2025, when the consequences of the Master's degree reform are known. Pilots and cross-cutting activities will continue in 2024, and the experiences from these will form the basis for the development of the final concepts.

- As we do not yet know what impact the Master's degree reform will have on AAU's education portfolio, we have revised the timeline for the project so that the work with the pilots can now continue until 2025. The Master's Committee's report will be published in the fall of 2024, after which we will have more knowledge about the consequences of the Master's degree reform. The extra time gives us an opportunity to gather experience from the pilots and cross-cutting activities in 2024, and thus further qualify the project's concepts, says Anne Marie Kanstrup, Prorector and chair of the project's steering committee.

Ongoing pilots and cross-cutting activities get more time

In the fall semester of 2023, the pilots have already been tested and experience has been gathered from the pilots. For example, AAU Micro has emerged as a pilot in the SSH and STEM project. Another example of a pilot that has had great support is the Fintech Hackathon, where more than 100 students from AAU gathered in AAU INNOVATE in the fall of 2023 to "hack" the banking sector's pension solutions in interdisciplinary teams.

With the new timeline, there is an opportunity to extend the pilots and ensure a stronger foundation for implementation. Throughout 2024, the project's working group will continuously follow up on the evaluation of the nine pilots that are currently being tested.

- I look forward to continuing the important work of ensuring a good foundation for future integration in conjunction with the impact the Master's degree reform will have on our education programs. Depth of knowledge in combination with holistic competencies is crucial in the field of education. The global challenges we face require graduates who can think holistically, concludes Prorector Anne Marie Kanstrup.

Om ”SSH- og STEM-kompetencer i AAU’s uddannelser”

In its strategy, Knowledge for the World 2022-26, AAU's ambition is for students at AAU to take an education that, in addition to their own in-depth expertise, gives them the skills and abilities to collaborate with other disciplines to solve specific challenges on a comprehensive level.

In 2022, a steering group and working group for the project was established. Read more about it here (in Danish)

In 2022, the working group worked on mapping existing integration at AAU and, based on this, developed concepts for the integration of SSH and STEM prior to the pilots. These concepts are currently being tested in the pilots on selected degree programs.

In the spring and early summer of 2023, the working group and IAS PBL facilitated the start-up of the pilots, which have so far been tested during the fall semester of 2023.

Some of the pilots will continue in the spring and autumn semesters of 2024. The pilots will be evaluated continuously until February 2025, when the project will be implemented broadly at AAU.
