Dyreskuepladsen in Aalborg was a sea of blue when more than 1,100 AAU employees took part in the DHL Relay Race on Tuesday, 27 August. Spirits were high as the AAU tent buzzed with life and laughter before the start. Amid the talking, greeting and laughter all around, colleagues from many of the university's departments and units got ready to either walk the distance as a team or run the five kilometres as part of the relay. The sense of community was palpable, both in the jerseys and in the mood.

In Copenhagen, approximately 135 AAU staff participated in the DHL Relay Race on 25 August.

There is no DHL Relay Race in Esbjerg. But about 40 AAU staff participated in the West Coast Race on 1 June, and several showed up to cheer on their colleagues.

What do employees get out of participating?

"Moving together and being together in one package"

Bo Jeppesen has done the DHL Relay Race nine out of the ten years he has been at AAU.

"I think it's a good way to cultivate fellowship in a different way than through the work. It’s the social aspect that’s the focus while we’re also fostering good health. We walk and run together, moving in a spirit of community, and we unite as one. We walk briskly and have a good talk about the big and small things in life, and I think that's really great," he says.

"Socializing and getting away with colleagues"

Amilia Fisher participated for the first time in the DHL Relay Race along with her colleagues from the entire HR department.

"This is the first year – we are a completely new team, and there are many new people this year," she says.

Amilia Fisher signed up for the social aspect, looking forward to both the race and the camaraderie:

"I'm most looking forward not only to running, getting out and burning off some energy after a full day at work, but also to having fun with my colleagues."

"Now I'm just here for the fun"

Lars Anderson, ITS

Lars Anderson, ITS

Lars Anderson has participated in the DHL Relay Race for 10-13 years and was here again this year with colleagues from different teams in ITS.

"Some years you’ve been a little more interested in it because you’ve been in good shape. I'm not this year, so now I'm just here for the fun."

For Lars Anderson, the event is not only about getting out and moving, but also about seeing both current and former colleagues. "I've been at the university for many years, so I also know people from other departments. So today I might also meet people I worked with five years ago whom I haven't seen for a long time. I think that's nice too," he explains.

"A nice evening with colleagues"

Cecilie Bachmann, Department of Clinical Medicine

Cecilie Bachmann came along with the administration from the Department of Clinical Medicine that was widely represented at this year's DHL Relay Race.

She was involved once before as a student assistant and now as a permanent staff member.

"I signed up for the social aspect – to socialize with my colleagues and have a nice evening with them. That's what I'm looking forward to the most."
