Towards real-time DNA-based microbial surveillance at water resource recovery facilities
Microbial communities are essential for well-working engineered systems, such as resource recovery from wastewater streams or bioenergy production. Fast and reliable analyses of the microbes have until recently not been possible to perform routinely. This PhD project developed workflows to enable microbial community analysis within few hours on-site water resource recovery facilities, and were successfully applied for both troubleshooting operational problems and for regular surveillance. The developed methods lay ground for using DNA sequencing as a sensor in resource recovery facilities and other systems where quick microbial community analyses are required.
